Harper Adams University

Delivering applied research and education for sustainable food, farming, animal and environmental futures.

Harper Adams University

Harper Adams University (HAU) was established in 1901 and is a registered Charity. The University is the largest provider of land based higher education courses in England. The University is organised into five academic departments: Animal Production, Welfare and Veterinary Sciences; Crop and Environment Sciences; Agricultural Engineering; Food Science and Agri-food Supply Chain Management; Land, Farm and Agribusiness Management. The University has c.450 staff including academic staff, and support staff. Academic staff conduct a wide range of research which has a clear focus on meeting the needs of the agri-food and land based industries. HAU is a Landex member.

Harper Adams’ Mission Statement is “Higher education and research for the delivery of a sustainable food chain and rural economy”. The University is the only provider in England of Higher Education in the specialist area of Agricultural Engineering and postgraduate courses in Entomology. Harper Adams is also home to the National Centre for Precision Farming (NCPF), the Soil and Water Management Centre, the Centre for Evidence Based Agriculture (CEBA), and the Centre for Integrated Pest Management (CIPM).

Harper Adams offers undergraduate degrees, taught postgraduate courses and postgraduate research degrees in all five academic departments. Our courses prepare students for graduate careers in the agri-food industry. All students undertake a placement year and the University is particularly proud of its employment rate which is currently 98 per cent (for full-time, first degree graduates, from the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey 2012).

In addition to degree programmes, the University also offers a wide range of employer engagement and short courses that provide continuous professional development opportunities for people already working in agri-food and land based industries, and those analogous to it including veterinary nursing and vet medicines.

We are a University and therefore ensure that our work meets the expectations of the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education as well as a range of professional bodies who accredit our degrees.
