To most people involved in UK farming and food it’s a lifetime commitment, a vocation . . . but it’s also a business and the agrifood business is a particularly tough one with the inevitable peaks and troughs of any business cycle The UK farming and food community can sometimes face extreme financial hardship, threatening livelihoods and housing, ruining health, tearing families apart Fortunately there are charitable institutions set up to provide help . . . financial assistance, counselling, housing. And, provided your hardship is as a result of activity in UK farming and food, this AFCP website may be able to help The process . . . simple! Below are a few of the charities available to help.

Scottish Charity No. SC009828

RSABI (formerly The Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution) is the Scottish charity dedicated to the relief of hardship and poverty among people who have depended on the land.  Anyone who has worked in agriculture, forestry, horticulture game-keeping and rural estate work may be eligible, as well as their dependants.  Assistance can be given in the form of crisis grants, annual payments or in kind, depending on circumstances. The charity now also operates a confidential listening service entitled “GATEPOST”.

FCN, a network of volunteers, provides a national helpline and visiting service to farming people facing difficulties. Pastoral and practical support is given for as long as it is needed, helping people to find a positive way forward through their problems.

The Addington Fund is a registered charity that helps farming families. Its main work is the Strategic Rural Housing Scheme. It buys houses specifically for those who lose their home as a result of leaving their farm and cannot finance a house on the open market. In exceptional circumstances its Trustees' Discretionary Fund may be able to help with cash grants for unforseen business costs in cases of financial hardship.
