Liverpool University School of Veterinary Science

Who we are

In 1904, Liverpool became the first veterinary school to be incorporated into a university. The foundation was a seminal event, establishing veterinary medicine as an academic scientific discipline and opening up the opportunity of government funding for what had been a private professional training in the art of veterinary practice. Some forty years later, the university acquired the first veterinary field station to be established in the UK; Leahurst, on the Wirral Peninsula, became the prototype rural site for all British city-centre vet schools.

What we do.

Liverpool is an innovative school, in the forefront of veterinary teaching and research. Quite some accolade! Our clinical caseload in all major species groups - small animals, horses and livestock - is unrivalled in any UK vet school. Leahurst is home to all three of our referral hospitals and two of our three first opinion practices.

Liverpool aims

  • to maintain and develop excellence in veterinary research so as to underpin the learning and teaching environment and improve the health and welfare of animals and humans; to foster collaborative and inter-disciplinary research both within and outwith the University of Liverpool;

  • to continue to deliver excellence in learning and teaching at clinical, paraclinical and preclinical levels; to be innovative and relevant to the current and future needs of veterinary graduates;

  • to maintain and further develop international excellence in clinical veterinary studies, and to deliver such excellence in animal care through the provision of outstanding Hospital and Practice facilities;

  • to be aware of and responsive to the wider and developing role of veterinary science in contributing to and informing social and environmental issues; and to act as a regional and national resource for the veterinary profession, the animal industry and the general public. This through the provision of education, continuing professional development and services; and to act as a particular resource and focus for the alumni of the Veterinary Faculty.
